The Bumpy Road to a Long-Term Solution

For those who don’t know me, I’m Abigail – Phil’s oldest daughter. It’s been a tough week for Dad and a stressful week for our family as his condition is worsening, so I’m stepping in for my mom in sharing this update.

On Tuesday, October 22, we took Dad to the emergency room for excessive coughing and shortness of breath. After several hours, he was admitted to the ER and diagnosed with pneumonia. This is one of the risks associated with ALS due to it becoming increasingly difficult to take a full deep breath that can circulate air all the way to the bottom of the lungs. They began treatment with a variety of antibiotics and some medications for the cough symptoms.

Dad spent the last 4 nights in the hospital, during which time caring for him became even more difficult. Everyday care tasks took at least 2-3 people to assist in completing. Thankfully the staff at the Cleveland Clinic Avon hospital are so kind, competent, and caring. We were genuinely impressed with each person we met there.

This level of care for Dad is not possible for Mom to sustain on her own, even with additional help at home. As of today (Saturday, Oct 26), he is transferring from the hospital to a long-term care facility in Avon. This facility is one that Mom and Dad toured together a few weeks ago and both really liked. The facility is The Woods on French Creek, and it is run by the same people who ran the nursing home where Dad’s brother, Paul, stayed.

While we are in a tough transition period, we know that the decision for long-term care at this time is the right choice to keep Dad safe. After he gets fully settled into the nursing home, we intend to bring some of his favorite things there to help it feel more like home. He’s been talking about his excitement for Christmas for a while now, so we may just decorate a little early (Dad loves nativities!).

Thank you all for your care and support. We love you.

It was so nice visiting with him in the hospital. I agree about the Avon Cleveland Clinic. I’ve stayed there four times and the staff is exceptional. Praying with him and over him was so special. I know his desire is still to be at Nancy’s wedding next year and to see his 40th wedding anniversary. We’re praying for all of you during this most difficult time. God has all of our days written in His book before we were even born. He has Phil’s written and He’s watching over everything that’s occurring. He’s a faithful Father and so very loving. Love you all.

I’m sorry to hear about these tough decisions that have had to happen. Caregiving is so hard, but also something that you have been walking through courageously. I am happy that you have taken the big picture and decided what was best for all. Praying for you.
